Nobody remembers the burger. They remember the potato salad that ran out first, the grilled corn nobody could stop eating, and the mystery bowl that got polished off before the coals even cooled. That's the real Labor Day lesson: sides win the table.

But fall has its own agenda, and mine rarely asks permission before showing up. Labor Day is supposed to be summer's last stand, and yet somewhere between the sunscreen and the sparklers, half of me is already thinking about soup season. So this spread is a little bit of both - the same grill-friendy, make-ahead sides that carried me through July, dressed up one more time before I let the season go.

Below is my current lineup of make-ahead, grill-friendly sides that hold up in late-summer heat, travel well to a park or backyard, and buy you enough breathing room to actually enjoy the last long weekend of the season instead of babysitting a stove.

Colorful Bean & Pasta Salad Classics

Black Bean Corn Avocado Salad
Creamy avocado, sweet corn, black beans, a dressing with actual bite. Naturally gluten-free and effortlessly generous-looking.

Creamy Macaroni Salad
The pasta salad everyone knows, rebuilt to actually taste like something. Made ahead on purpose.

Easy Macaroni Salad

Brussels Sprout Coleslaw
Sharp, crisp, horseradish-spiked. Not the mayo-heavy slaw politely sitting next to the hot dogs - this one wakes the whole plate up.
👉 Zesty Brussels Sprout Coleslaw

Charred Mediterranean Vegetables
Smoky, jammy, a little unruly. Pile them on a platter and watch people call it "just trying the veggies" on their third helping.

Creamy, Comforting Sides

Potatoes go on my Labor Day list before anything else gets decided. They travel well, sit happily at room temperature for hours, and taste even better the next day - basically the last cookout of summer's dream ingredient.

Creamy Garlic Potatoes
Silky, garlicky, stovetop-simple. Looks like a labor of love, takes twenty minutes.

Greek Hasselback Potatoes
They are a crispy, golden celebration of bold flavors: lemon, cumin, garlic butter and Feta.

Southern Potato Salad with Pickles

Irish Mashed Potato Salad with Kale and Bacon
Colcannon's rowdier cousin. Buttery mash, crispy bacon, cabbage - comfort food with a little swagger.

Slow Cooker Grilled Sweet Creamed Corn
Grill the corn, dump it in the slow cooker, walk away, take the credit. Buttery corn that turns into pure comfort while your grill stays free for everything else.

Finger Foods

Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs
One bite in, and it's an egg-and-cheddar problem. Make ahead, serve cold, watch them vanish.

Labor Day Drink Menu

  • Red Sangria (includes Mocktail version) - the crowd-control pitcher. Bold, batchable, works for drinkers and mocktail fans from the same jug.
  • Spicy Peach Margarita - sweet and friendly, then the heat shows up and suddenly everyone's paying attention to their glass.
  • Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks (No Mix) - fresh berries, clean flavor, none of the syrupy hangover energy.
  • S'mores Martini - dessert moonlighting as a cocktail. Playful look, real drink punch.
  • Cherry coke, Diet Coke, Coke, water, lemonade, iced tea/sweet tea
